For man, autumn is a time of harvest, of gathering together. For nature, it is a time of sowing, of scattering abroad.

A Whole New Investment Option: Whole Life
|
Whole Life is back. In a good way. As the financial crisis rages on, it seems Whole Life, with its dual emphasis on life insurance and conservative bond investment, has managed to weather the storm. If you would like to invest above and beyond your current 401K or stock portfolio, Whole Life Insurance could be a feasible option. Many younger couples and individuals are – and have been – fond of Term Life policies and for good reason. They are, and will remain, the more affordable and adjustable option. But, whereas Term Life Insurance provides you and your family with a set value of benefits, Whole Life can accrue value over the course of your life. It grows with you. Think of it as the difference between owning and renting your home: Whole life is more of a permanent policy; with term life you are “renting” the coverage. Once your term or “lease” is up, your rates can increase or you may find yourself uninsurable medically. How does it do that?
When you opt for a Whole Life policy, your premium is deposited into a cash value account. In most cases that cash value account entails an investment in bonds, at a 3% to 4% rate of interest. Simple economics maintains the longer you can stay invested, the more likely you are to see a profit or gain. An attractive feature of Whole Life is the fact that all profits – or gains – are tax-deferred. Conversely, all the premiums you invest into the policy over the course of your life can be withdrawn, tax-free!
The old saying when it came to Term Life was “buy term and invest the difference.” Unfortunately, with Wall Street in such a sad state of affairs, chances are those investments are not performing as well as many of the bonds associated with Whole Life Insurance.
Brace yourself – the premiums for Whole Life are more substantial than those associated with Term Life. But, keep in mind your premiums are being invested and can be withdrawn, in full, without a tax penalty.
