Distraction from cell phone use while driving (hand held or hands free) can be just as dangerous as driving with a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent. Drivers that use a cell phone while driving are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves or someone else; not to mention distracted driving is the common factor found in 25% of police reported crashes.Due to the number of accidents that are related to cell phone use while driving, some jurisdictions have made the use of a cell phone while driving illegal. Others have enacted laws to ban handheld mobile phone use, but allow use of a hands free device.

To help keep you and others safe on the road, practice some of the following cell phone safety tips:

    1. Whenever possible, make calls when your car is not moving.
    2. Use the cell phone only when absolutely necessary. Save casual conversations for times when your vehicle is stopped. Plan your conversation in advance, and keep it short and avoid emotional topics; especially in hazardous conditions such as rain, snow or heavy traffic.
    3. Program frequently called numbers into your phone’s memory. The less dialing, the better.
    4. Keep your phone within easy reach.
    5. Never take notes, write messages, or look up phone numbers while driving. If you must do any of these things, pull over.
    6. When pulling over to make calls, look up directions, etc. avoid dangerous areas and lock car doors.
    7. If possible, ask a passenger to make or take a call for you.
    8. If you must dial while driving, hold the phone at eye level so you can see the road.
