Fort Hood, Texas was host to a huge motorcycle safety program that had 300 soldiers riding alongside actors Kim Coates and Theo Rossi of the popular ‘Sons of Anarchy’ television program. This was the 3rd year of the 50 mile motorcycle ride that was put in place to promote safe riding to US soldiers. Soldiers are a large part of the motorcycle population, “There’s something about motorcycles and being a warrior. These two things are akin,”.
The event took place just before spring break and as gas prices are on the rise. The timing was purposely planned so as to have the greatest effect on the riders. Command Sgt. Maj. Glen Vela, senior enlisted advisor of the ride’s sponsoring unit, the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade said, “We’re about to go on spring break and, with gas prices high, right now, a lot of people are thinking about hitting the road. At the end of the day, if we can save one guy from a motorcycle accident by being more visible and cautious, that’s what it’s all about.”
Several soldiers are killed each year on the base at Fort Hood due to motorcycle accidents but since the safety program has been implemented that number is declining. There has been one soldier so far this year that has been part of a fatal motorcycle accident and is one of the reasons that Lt. Gen. Bob Cone makes it difficult for those who want to ride a bike at Fort Hood. Going through the motorcycle safety program is a must.
All the soldiers ride for different reasons but in most cases it’s a stress reliever and helps take the mind off the everyday, hard tasks a US soldier takes on. Having to train to go to war, to actually going to war, and dealing with the fact of death is hard enough to try and deal with but keeping the troops safe on their own home base is one task that can definitely happen and it starts with a great program like this at Fort Hood in Texas.
